Black Friday is a day of crazy shopping rush and huge profits for businesses. For the workers, it is a day of murderous effort. Amazon, the global giant, is a symbol of various kinds of pathologies in commerce. Instead of improving working conditions, the company represses and tries to silence those who expose them and fight for their improvement. Two weeks ago the corporation illegally dismissed protected union member, Magda Malinowska Magda Malin, who had worked there for 6 years. As a social health and safety inspector designated by the union, Magda was trying to monitor the company’s conduct around an accident in Amazon warehouse near Poznań, whish lead to the death of her colleague. As a response, last Friday we – the workers and farmers – blocked a street in the centre of Warsaw, near one of the biggest shopping centres. Our banners read and our throats screamed: STOP THE PATHOLOGICAL TRADE! BRING BACK MAGDA TO WORK! and MAKE AMAZON PAY! Make them pay for the deaths of our colleagues in the workplace! Make them pay for union busting and illegal dismissal! Make them pay for the exploitation of workers and the destruction of our health! Make them pay for the destruction of the planet and for tax evasion on an exorbitant scale! The protest was attended by delegations from various workplace sections of our union, in logistics and industry: Amazon, Danfoss, Avon; in art, culture and education: Museum of Modern Art, Museum of the History of Polish Jews, University of Warsaw as well as by IP Warsaw Youth Group and IP Warsaw Local Committee. We were also supported by other organisations: AgroUnia (Agrounia), Greenpeace (Greenpeace Polska) and Social Justice Chamber (Kancelaria Sprawiedliwości Społecznej).
Our strength is growing and solidarity is our weapon!
